facing the Kaʿbah: When the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) stood for prayer, he would face the Kaʿbah in both obligatory and voluntary prayers. He (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) commanded this, saying to the one who prayed incorrectly: (al-Bukhārī and Muslim) "When you stand for prayer, perform ablution thoroughly, then face the qiblah and say the takbīr" (al-Bukhārī and Muslim). And (when he (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) was traveling, he would pray voluntary prayers on his mount and perform witr on it, regardless of its direction [east or west]) (Muslim). Concerning this, the verse was revealed: "So wherever you turn, there is the Face of Allāh" (Sūrat al-Baqarah, 115) (Abū Dāwūd and Ibn Ḥibbān). And (sometimes, when he intended to perform a voluntary prayer on his camel, he would face the qiblah, say the takbīr, and then pray in whichever direction his mount faced) (Aḥmad and al-Tirmidhī, who authenticated it). And (he would bow and prostrate on his mount by gesturing with his head, making the prostration lower than the bowing) (al-Bukhārī and Aḥmad). And (when he intended to perform an obligatory prayer, he would dismount and face the qiblah)
