sometimes, and at other times he would prolong it, and at yet other times he would extend it so much that ʿAbdullāh ibn Masʿūd (raḍiya Allāhu ʿanhu) said: (al-Bukhārī and Muslim) "I prayed with the Prophet (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) one night, and he remained standing until I thought of something bad." It was said: "And what did you think?" He said: "I thought of sitting down and leaving the Prophet (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam)." Ḥudhayfah ibn al-Yamān said: (Muslim and al-Nasāʾī) "I prayed with the Prophet (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) one night, and he began with Sūrat al-Baqarah. I thought he would bow at one hundred [verses], but he continued. I thought he would pray with it in [two rakʿahs], but he continued. I thought he would bow with it, then he began Sūrat al-Nisāʾ and recited it, then he began Sūrat Āl ʿImrān and recited it. He recited slowly; when he passed by a verse of glorification, he glorified; when he passed by a verse of supplication, he supplicated; and when he passed by a verse of seeking refuge, he sought refuge. Then he bowed..." The ḥadīth (authenticated by al-Ḥākim and agreed upon by al-Dhahabī) and (he recited one night while he was ill the seven long ones) (authentic) and (sometimes he would recite in each rakʿah a sūrah from them) (Muslim and Abū Dāwūd). and (it is not known that he recited the entire Qurʾān in one night [ever]), rather he did not approve of this for ʿAbdullāh ibn ʿAmr (raḍiya Allāhu ʿanhu) when he said to him:
تارة ويطيلها أحيانا ويبالغ في إطالتها أحيانا أخرى حتى قال عبد الله بن مسعود رضي الله عن هـ: (البخاري ومسلم) (صليت مع النبي ﷺ ليلة فلم يزل قائما حتى هممت بأمر سوء قيل: وما هممت قال: هممت أن أقعد وأذر النبي ﷺ). وقال حذيفة بن اليمان: (مسلم والنسائي) (صليت مع النبي ﷺ ذات ليلة فافتتح البقرة فقلت يركع عند المائة ثم مضى فقلت: يصلي بها في [ركعتين] فمضى فقلت: يركع بها ثم افتتح النساء فقرأها ثم افتتح آل عمران فقرأها يقرأ مترسلا إذا مر بآية فيها تسبيح سبح وإذا مر بسؤال سأل وإذا مر بتعوذ تعوذ ثم ركع...). الحديث (صححه الحاكم ووافقه الذهبي) و (قرأ ليلة وهو وجع السبع الطوال) (صحيح) و (كان - أحيانا - يقرأ في كل ركعة بسورة منها) (مسلم وأبو داود). و (ما علم أنه قرأ القرآن كله في ليلة [قط]) بل إنه لم يرض ذلك لعبد الله بن عمرو رضي الله عن هـ حين قال له:
