This is one of the corruptions of graves, their construction, decoration, and plastering. Among the corruptions that reach the extent of throwing its perpetrator beyond the wall of Islam, and casting him headlong from the highest place of religion, is that many of them bring the best of their livestock and the finest of their cattle and slaughter them at that grave, seeking closeness to it, hoping for what they secretly wish to obtain from it. They dedicate it to other than Allāh, and worship it as an idol among idols, for there is no difference between slaughtering sacrifices for erected stones they call an idol, and a grave of a deceased they call a grave. Merely differing in name does not change the truth, nor does it affect permissibility or prohibition, for whoever calls wine by another name and drinks it, his ruling is the same as the one who drinks it while calling it by its name, without any disagreement among all Muslims. There is no doubt that slaughtering is a type of worship that Allāh has commanded His servants to perform, like offerings, ransoms, and sacrifices. So, the one who seeks closeness to the grave and slaughters at it has no purpose in doing so except to honor and venerate it, to attract good from it and repel harm through it.
