thereby achieving the aim of those whom Satan has made his brothers from among the children of Adam at that grave. For they only performed those acts and terrified the people with those intimidations, and lied with those falsehoods, to gain a portion of the wealth from the ignorant masses. With this cursed pretext and devilish means, endowments on graves have multiplied and reached a significant extent, so much so that the yields of what is endowed to the famous among them, if gathered, would suffice to sustain the inhabitants of a large village among the Muslims. If those invalid endowments were sold, Allāh would enrich a great number of the poor with them, and all of it is from vows made in disobedience to Allāh. It has been authentically reported from the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) that he said: "There is no vow in disobedience to Allāh." It is also from vows that are not intended to seek the pleasure of Allāh, but all of them are vows that earn the doer the wrath and anger of Allāh. because they lead the person to what belief in the divinity of the dead leads to, causing the foundation of religion to be shaken. For no one would give up their most beloved and cherished wealth unless Satan had planted in their heart love and veneration for that grave and its occupant, and an excessive belief in it that does not allow them to return to Islam safely. We seek refuge in Allāh from disgrace. There is no doubt that most of these deceived and deluded people, if someone were to ask them to vow what they vowed for the grave of a dead person as an act of obedience or a means of drawing closer [to Allāh], they would not do it, nor would they come close to doing it
