the lover fears the loss of what he desires or the attainment of what he dreads, so a servant of Allāh and His lover is always between fear and hope, as Allāh said (al-Isrāʾ, 57): "Those whom they invoke seek the means to their Lord, which of them will be nearest, and they hope for His mercy and fear His punishment. Indeed, the punishment of your Lord is ever feared." And if the servant is sincere to Allāh, his Lord selects him, revives his heart, and draws him to Himself, so that what opposes this from evil and immorality is turned away from him, and he fears the occurrence of its opposite. Unlike the heart that is not sincere to Allāh, for in it is a pursuit, desire, and love without restriction, so it inclines towards whatever presents itself to it and clings to what it desires, like a branch that any passing breeze bends and inclines. At times, it is drawn by forbidden and non-forbidden images, remaining a captive, a servant to one who, if he were to take him as a servant, it would be a fault, a deficiency, and a disgrace. At other times, it is drawn by honor and leadership, so a word pleases him, and a word angers him, and he becomes enslaved by those who praise him, even falsely, and opposes those who criticize him, even truthfully. At other times, he is enslaved by the dirham and the dinar and similar matters that enslave hearts, and hearts desire them, so he takes his desire as his deity and follows his desire without guidance from Allāh. And whoever is not sincerely a servant to Allāh, whose heart has become a temple for his Lord alone, without partner, such that Allāh is more beloved to him than anything else, and he is humble and submissive to Him, otherwise, the creations will enslave him
