Often, hidden desires infiltrate the soul, corrupting its sincere love for Allāh, its servitude to Him, and its devotion to His religion. As Shaddād ibn Aws said: "O the calamities of the Arabs, O the calamities of the Arabs! The thing I fear most for you is ostentation and hidden desire." It was said to Abū Dāwūd al-Sijistānī: "What is hidden desire?" He said: "The love of leadership." From Kaʿb ibn Mālik, from the Prophet (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam), that he said: "Two hungry wolves sent into a sheep pen are not more destructive to it than a man's greed for wealth and status is to his religion." al-Tirmidhī said: "This is a ḥadīth that is ḥasan ṣaḥīḥ."
