and his friend. For this reason, neither of them suffices in the worship of Allāh, the Exalted. Rather, it is necessary that Allāh is more beloved to the servant than anything else and that Allāh is greater in his view than everything else. In fact, none deserves complete love and submission except Allāh. And whatever is loved for other than Allāh, its love is corrupt, and whatever is revered without Allāh's command, its reverence is invalid. Allāh, the Exalted, said (Sūrah al-Tawbah, 24): "Say, if your fathers, your sons, your brothers, your spouses, your relatives, the wealth you have acquired, the commerce you fear may decline, and the dwellings you are pleased with are more beloved to you than Allāh and His Messenger and striving in His way, then wait until Allāh brings about His command." Thus, the essence of love is for Allāh and His Messenger, just as obedience is for Allāh and His Messenger, and seeking to please is for Allāh and His Messenger: "And Allāh and His Messenger are more deserving that they should please Him" (Sūrah al-Tawbah, 62), and giving is for Allāh and His Messenger: "If only they had been content with what Allāh and His Messenger gave them" (Sūrah al-Tawbah, 59). As for worship and what is related to it, such as reliance and fear and the like, they are only for Allāh alone, as He said (Sūrah Āl ʿImrān, 64): "Say, O People of the Book, come to a word that is equitable between us and you, that we will not worship except Allāh and not associate anything with Him, and not take one another as lords instead of Allāh. But if they turn away, then say, 'Bear witness that we are Muslims.'" And He said (Sūrah al-Tawbah, 59): "If only they had been content with what Allāh and His Messenger gave them and said, 'Sufficient for us is Allāh; Allāh will give us of His bounty, and so will His Messenger. Indeed, we are desirous toward Allāh.'" Thus, giving is for Allāh and the Messenger, as He said (Sūrah al-Ḥashr, 7): "And whatever the Messenger has given you, take it; and whatever he has forbidden you, refrain from it." And as for
