and jihād: it is the exertion of effort—meaning all that one possesses in terms of capability—in achieving what is beloved to the Truth and repelling what is disliked by the Truth. So if a servant neglects what they are capable of in jihād, it is an indication of the weakness of their love for Allāh and His Messenger in their heart. It is known that beloved things are generally not attained except by enduring disliked things, whether the love is righteous or corrupt. Those who love wealth, leadership, and appearances do not achieve their desires except with harm that befalls them in this world, along with what afflicts them of harm in this world and the Hereafter. Thus, the one who loves Allāh and His Messenger, if they do not endure what those who are wise among the lovers of other than Allāh endure in pursuit of their beloved, it indicates the weakness of their love for Allāh if what those people pursue is, in their view, the path that reason suggests. And it is known that the believer is more intense in love for Allāh. He, the Exalted, said (Sūrah al-Baqarah, 165): "Yet there are some who take others as equals to Allāh, loving them as they should love Allāh. But those who believe are more intense in their love for Allāh." Indeed, a lover may, due to the weakness of their intellect and the corruption of their perception, follow a path that does not achieve the desired outcome. Such a path is not praiseworthy if the love is righteous and commendable, so how much more so if the love is corrupt and the path does not lead to the goal? Just as the reckless do in pursuit of wealth, leadership, and appearances, loving things that bring them harm and do not..
