the desire for evil seeks to repel it, for it corrupts the heart just as weeds corrupt the crop. For this reason, He, the Exalted, said [al-Shams 9-10]: "He has succeeded who purifies it, * and he has failed who instills it [with corruption]." And He, the Exalted, said [al-Aʿlá 14-15]: "He has succeeded who purifies himself, * and mentions the name of his Lord and prays." And He, the Exalted, said [al-Nūr 30]: "Tell the believing men to lower their gaze and guard their private parts; that is purer for them." And He, the Exalted, said [al-Nūr 21]: "And if it were not for the favor of Allāh upon you and His mercy, not one of you would have been pure, ever." Thus, He, the Glorified, made lowering the gaze and guarding the private parts the strongest purification for the soul, and He clarified that abstaining from immoralities is part of the purification of the souls. The purification of the souls includes the removal of all evils, such as immoralities, injustice, shirk, lying, and other such things. Likewise, the one who seeks leadership and elevation on earth has a heart that is subservient to those who assist him in it, even if outwardly he is their leader and obeyed among them. In reality, he hopes for and fears them, so he offers them wealth and positions and pardons what they commit to gain their obedience and assistance. Outwardly, he is an obeyed leader, but in reality, he is a compliant servant to them. The truth is that both of them are in servitude to each other, and both abandon the true worship of Allāh. And if their cooperation is for elevation on earth
