and one of the greatest causes of this affliction is the heart's turning away from Allāh, for if the heart tastes the sweetness of worshiping Allāh and sincerity towards Him, nothing will be sweeter, more delightful, more enjoyable, or more pleasing to it. A person does not abandon something beloved except for another beloved that is dearer to him or out of fear of something disliked. Thus, corrupt love is only turned away from the heart by righteous love or by fear of harm. Allāh said regarding Yūsuf (Sūrah Yūsuf, 24): "Thus [it was] that We might avert from him evil and immorality. Indeed, he was of Our chosen servants." So Allāh averts from His servant what troubles him from inclining towards images and attachment to them, and He averts immorality from him through his sincerity to Allāh. For this reason, before he tastes the sweetness of servitude to Allāh and sincerity to Him, his soul overpowers him to follow its desires. But when he tastes the sweetness of sincerity and it strengthens in his heart, his desires are subdued without any remedy. Allāh said (Sūrah al-ʿAnkabūt, 45): "Indeed, prayer prohibits immorality and wrongdoing, and the remembrance of Allāh is greater." For prayer contains the repulsion of what is disliked, which is immorality and wrongdoing, and it contains the attainment of what is beloved, which is the remembrance of Allāh. The attainment of this beloved is greater than the repulsion of that disliked, for the remembrance of Allāh is worship of Allāh, and the worship of the heart for Allāh is intended for its own sake. As for the repulsion of evil from him, it is intended for something else as a secondary purpose. The heart was created to love the truth, desire it, and seek it, so when it is presented to it..
