and these lovers of images are among the people who suffer the greatest torment and receive the least reward. For if the heart of a lover remains attached and enslaved to an image, he accumulates types of evil and corruption that only the Lord of the servants can enumerate. Even if he is spared from committing the major sin, the continuous attachment of the heart to it without committing the sin is more harmful to him than someone who commits a sin and then repents from it, removing its effect from his heart. These people are likened to the intoxicated and the insane, as it is said: "Intoxicated by passion and intoxicated by wine... when will there be recovery for one who is intoxicated by both?" And it is said: "They said, 'You are mad with love for whom you desire,' so I told them... love is greater than what afflicts the insane." Love does not allow its possessor to recover throughout his life... whereas the madman is only struck down at times
وَهَؤُلَاء عشاق الصُّور، من أعظم النَّاس عذَابا وَأَقلهمْ ثَوابًا، فَإِن العاشق لصورة إِذا بَقِي قلبه مُتَعَلقا بهَا مستعبدا لَهَا اجْتمع لَهُ من أَنْوَاع الشَّرّ وَالْفساد مَا لَا يُحْصِيه إِلَّا رب الْعباد. وَلَو سلم من فعل الْفَاحِشَة الْكُبْرَى فداوم تعلق الْقلب بهَا بِلَا فعل الْفَاحِشَة أَشد ضَرَرا عَلَيْهِ مِمَّن يفعل ذَنبا ثمَّ يَتُوب مِنْهُ وَيَزُول أَثَره من قلبه. وَهَؤُلَاء يشبّهون بالسكارى والمجانين كَمَا قيل: سُكران سُكر هوى وسُكر مدامة ... وَمَتى إفاقة من بِهِ سُكران؟ وَقيل: قَالُوا جُننتَ بِمن تهوى فَقلت لَهُم ... الْعِشْق أعظم مِمَّا بالمجانين. الْعِشْق لَا يستفيق الدهرَ صاحبُه ... وَإِنَّمَا يُصرع الْمَجْنُون فِي حِين.
