and a person must obtain what he needs of sustenance and the like, and avert what harms him. For both matters, it is prescribed that his supplication be to Allāh, so he should not ask for his sustenance except from Allāh, nor complain except to Him, as Yaʿqūb (ʿalayhi al-salām) said [Yūsuf 86]: "I only complain of my suffering and my grief to Allāh." And Allāh, the Exalted, mentioned in the Qurʾān the beautiful avoidance, the beautiful forgiveness, and the beautiful patience. It has been said: beautiful avoidance is avoidance without harm, beautiful forgiveness is forgiveness without reproach, and beautiful patience is patience without complaining to the creation. For this reason, it was recited to Aḥmad ibn Ḥanbal during his illness that Ṭāwūs disliked the groaning of the sick and would say: it is a complaint, so Aḥmad did not groan until he passed away. As for complaining to the Creator, it does not contradict beautiful patience, for Yaʿqūb said [Yūsuf 83]: "So patience is beautiful," and he said [Yūsuf 86]: "I only complain of my suffering and my grief to Allāh." ʿUmar ibn al-Khaṭṭāb (raḍiya Allāhu ʿanhu) used to recite Sūrah Yūnus, Yūsuf, and al-Naḥl in the Fajr prayer, and when he passed by this verse in his recitation, he wept until his sobbing could be heard from the back rows
