on the Day of Resurrection with scratches, wounds, or marks on his face." And his saying: "Asking is not permissible except for one in severe debt, or in painful bloodshed, or in extreme poverty." This meaning is in "al-Ṣaḥīḥ," and it also includes: "For one of you to take his rope and go to gather firewood is better for him than to ask people, whether they give him or withhold from him." And he said: "Whatever comes to you from this wealth while you are not asking or seeking it eagerly, then take it; and what does not, do not let your soul follow it." He disliked taking it with the asking of the tongue and the eagerness of the heart. And he said in the authentic ḥadīth: "Whoever seeks to be independent, Allāh will make him independent; whoever seeks chastity, Allāh will grant him chastity; whoever is patient, Allāh will make him patient. No one is given a gift better and more comprehensive than patience."
مَسْأَلته يَوْم الْقِيَامَة خدوشا أَو خموشا أَو كدوشا فِي وَجهه ". وَقَوله: " لَا تحل الْمَسْأَلَة إِلَّا لذِي غرم مفظع أَو دم موجع أَو فقر مدقع ". وَهَذَا الْمَعْنى فِي " الصَّحِيح " وَفِيه أَيْضا: " لِأَن يَأْخُذ أحدكُم حبله فَيذْهب فيحتطب خير لَهُ من أَن يسْأَل النَّاس أَعْطوهُ أَو منعُوهُ ". وَقَالَ: " مَا أَتَاك من هَذَا المَال وَأَنت غير سَائل وَلَا مستشرف فَخذه وَمَا لَا فَلَا تتبعه نَفسك ". فكره أَخذه مَعَ سُؤال اللِّسَان واستشراف الْقلب. وَقَالَ فِي الحَدِيث الصَّحِيح: " من يسْتَغْن يغنه الله وَمن يستعف يعفه الله وَمن يتصبر يصبره الله وَمَا أعطي أحد عَطاء خيرا وأوسع من الصَّبْر ".
