in the authentic ḥadīth: "Three qualities, whoever possesses them will taste the sweetness of faith: one who loves Allāh and His Messenger more than anything else, one who loves a person only for the sake of Allāh, and one who hates to return to disbelief after Allāh has saved him from it as he would hate to be thrown into the fire." And he (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) said: "He has tasted the flavor of faith who is content with Allāh as his Lord, with Islam as his religion, and with Muḥammad as his Prophet." As for the people of disbelief, innovation, and desires, each according to his own. It was said to Sufyān ibn ʿUyaynah: "Why do the people of whims have such intense love for their whims?" He replied: "Have you forgotten His saying, the Exalted [Sūrah al-Baqarah, 93]: ﴿And their hearts absorbed [the worship of] the calf because of their disbelief﴾ or something similar to this statement." The idol worshippers love their gods as He, the Exalted, said [Sūrah al-Baqarah, 165]: ﴿And among the people are those who take other than Allāh as equals [to Him]. They love them as they [should] love Allāh. But those who believe are stronger in love for Allāh﴾. And He said [Sūrah al-Qaṣaṣ, 50]: ﴿But if they do not respond to you, then know that they only follow their desires. And who is more astray than one who follows his desire without guidance from Allāh?﴾ And He said [Sūrah al-Najm, 23]: ﴿They follow not except assumption and what [their] souls desire, and there has certainly come to them from their Lord guidance﴾. For this reason, these people incline towards and are infatuated with listening to poetry and sounds that stir up unrestrained love that is not exclusive to the people of faith but..
