and the religion is what He has legislated. Allāh, the Exalted, said (Sūrah al-Tawbah, 59): "If only they had been content with what Allāh and His Messenger gave them and said, 'Sufficient for us is Allāh; Allāh will give us of His bounty, and [so will] His Messenger; indeed, we are desirous toward Allāh.'" Thus, He attributed the giving to Allāh and the Messenger, as He said (Sūrah al-Ḥashr, 7): "And whatever the Messenger has given you - take; and what he has forbidden you - refrain from." And He made reliance upon Allāh alone by saying: "and said, 'Sufficient for us is Allāh,'" and did not say: "and His Messenger" - as He described the Companions (raḍiya Allāhu ʿanhum) in another verse (Sūrah Āl ʿImrān, 173): "Those to whom the people said, 'Indeed, the people have gathered against you, so fear them.' But it [merely] increased them in faith, and they said, 'Sufficient for us is Allāh, and [He is] the best Disposer of affairs.'" And similar to this is His saying (Sūrah al-Anfāl, 64): "O Prophet, sufficient for you is Allāh and for whoever follows you of the believers," meaning sufficient for you and sufficient for the believers, as He said (Sūrah al-Zumar, 36): "Is not Allāh sufficient for His Servant?" Then He said: "Allāh will give us of His bounty, and [so will] His Messenger," thus attributing the giving to Allāh and the Messenger, and He mentioned the bounty of Allāh first because "bounty is in the hand of Allāh; He gives it to whom He wills, and Allāh is the possessor of great bounty." And He has bounty over His Messenger and over the believers, and He said: "indeed, we are desirous toward Allāh," thus making the desire toward Allāh alone, as in His saying (Sūrah al-Sharḥ, 7-8): "So when you have finished [your duties], then stand up [for worship]. And to your Lord direct [your] longing." And the Prophet (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) said to Ibn ʿAbbās: "When you ask, ask Allāh, and when you seek help, seek help from Allāh." And the Qurʾān indicates this in several places
وَالدّين مَا شَرعه قَالَ الله تَعَالَى [٥٩ التَّوْبَة] : ﴿وَلَو أَنهم رَضوا مَا آتَاهُم الله وَرَسُوله وَقَالُوا حَسبنَا الله سيؤتينا الله من فَضله وَرَسُوله إِنَّا إِلَى الله راغبون﴾. فَجعل الإيتاء لله وَلِلرَّسُولِ كَمَا قَالَ [٧ الْحَشْر] : ﴿وَمَا آتَاكُم الرَّسُول فَخُذُوهُ وَمَا نهاكم عَنهُ فَانْتَهوا﴾. وَجعل التَّوَكُّل على الله وَحده بقوله: ﴿وَقَالُوا حَسبنَا الله﴾ وَلم يقل: وَرَسُوله - كَمَا قَالَ فِي وصف الصَّحَابَة ﵃ فِي الْآيَة الْأُخْرَى [١٧٣ آل عمرَان] : ﴿الَّذين قَالَ لَهُم النَّاس إِن النَّاس قد جمعُوا لكم فَاخْشَوْهُمْ فَزَادَهُم إِيمَانًا وَقَالُوا حَسبنَا الله وَنعم الْوَكِيل﴾. وَمثله قَوْله [٦٤ الْأَنْفَال] : ﴿يَا أَيهَا النَّبِي حَسبك الله وَمن اتبعك من الْمُؤمنِينَ﴾ أَي حَسبك وَحسب الْمُؤمنِينَ كَمَا قَالَ [٣٦ الزمر] : ﴿أَلَيْسَ الله بكاف عَبده﴾. ثمَّ قَالَ: ﴿سيؤتينا الله من فَضله وَرَسُوله﴾ فَجعل الإيتاء لله وَلِلرَّسُولِ وَقدم ذكر الْفضل لله لِأَن ﴿الْفضل بيد الله يؤتيه من يَشَاء وَالله ذُو الْفضل الْعَظِيم﴾. وَله الْفضل على رَسُوله وعَلى الْمُؤمنِينَ وَقَالَ: ﴿إِنَّا إِلَى الله راغبون﴾ فَجعل الرَّغْبَة إِلَى الله وَحده كَمَا فِي قَوْله [٧-٨ الشَّرْح] : ﴿فَإِذا فرغت فانصب * وَإِلَى رَبك فارغب﴾. وَقَالَ النَّبِي ﷺ لِابْنِ عَبَّاس: " إِذا سَأَلت فاسأل الله وَإِذا استعنت فَاسْتَعِنْ بِاللَّه ". وَالْقُرْآن يدل على مثل هَذَا فِي غير مَوضِع.
