And His saying, the Exalted: "He has named you Muslims before and in this" (Sūrah al-Ḥajj, 22:78). From al-Ḥārith al-Ashʿarī (raḍiya Allāhu ʿanhu) from the Prophet (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) that he said: "I command you with five things that Allāh has commanded me with: listening, obedience, striving, migration, and community. For whoever departs from the community even by a handspan has removed the bond of Islam from his neck, unless he returns. And whoever calls with the call of the pre-Islamic era, he is from the heaps of Hell." A man said, "O Messenger of Allāh, even if he prays and fasts?" He said, "Even if he prays and fasts. So call with the call of Allāh, who named you Muslims and believers, servants of Allāh." This was narrated by Aḥmad and al-Tirmidhī, who said: It is a good and authentic ḥadīth. And in the authentic [collections]: "Whoever departs from the community by a handspan, his death is a death of ignorance." And in it: "With the call of the pre-Islamic era while I am among you?" Abū al-ʿAbbās said: Everything that departs from the claim of Islam and the Qurʾān, whether it be lineage, country, race, sect, or method, is from the mourning of the pre-Islamic era. Indeed, when a Muhājir and an Anṣārī argued, the Muhājir said, "O Muhājirīn!" and the Anṣārī said, "O Anṣār!" The Prophet (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) said: "With the call of the pre-Islamic era while I am among you?" And he was greatly angered by that. This concludes his words.
