being preferred, and each person being impressed with their own opinion, then focus on yourself and leave the common people alone; for there will come days after you when the one who is patient among them will be like one holding onto hot coals; the one who acts during those days will have the reward of fifty men who do the same work as you. We said: From us or from them? He said: Rather, from you." This was narrated by Abū Dāwūd and al-Tirmidhī. Ibn Waḍḍāḥ narrated its meaning from the ḥadīth of Ibn ʿUmar (raḍiya Allāhu ʿanhu) with the wording: "Indeed, after you there will come days when the one who is patient and holds onto what you are upon today will have the reward of fifty of you. It was said: O Messenger of Allāh, from them? He said: Rather, from you." Then he said: Muḥammad ibn Saʿīd informed us, Asad informed us, Sufyān ibn ʿUyaynah from Aslam al-Baṣrī from Saʿīd, the brother of al-Ḥasan, raising it [to the Prophet], I said to Sufyān, from the Prophet (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam)? He said: Yes, he said: "Today you are upon clear guidance from your Lord, you enjoin what is right, forbid what is wrong, and strive in the cause of Allāh, and the two intoxications have not appeared among you: the intoxication of ignorance and the intoxication of love for worldly life. And you will turn away from that, not enjoining what is right, nor forbidding what is wrong, nor striving in the cause of Allāh. And the two intoxications will appear among you. So the one who holds onto the Book and the sunnah on that day will have the reward of fifty. It was said: From them? He said: No, rather from you." And with a chain of narration from al-Maʿāfirī, he said: The Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) said: "Glad tidings to the strangers who hold onto the Book when it is abandoned, and act upon the sunnah when it is extinguished."
