From al-ʿIrbāḍ ibn Sāriyah who said: "The Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) gave us an eloquent sermon that made the hearts tremble and the eyes weep. We said: O Messenger of Allāh, it is as if it were a farewell sermon, so advise us. He said: I advise you to fear Allāh, and to listen and obey even if a slave is appointed over you. Indeed, whoever among you lives will see much disagreement, so adhere to my sunnah and the sunnah of the rightly guided caliphs after me; hold onto it with your molars. And beware of newly invented matters, for every innovation is misguidance." Al-Tirmidhī said: This is a good and authentic ḥadīth. And from Ḥudhayfah who said: "Do not engage in any act of worship that the Companions of Muḥammad did not engage in, for the first generation did not leave anything for the later ones to say. So fear Allāh, O community of reciters, and follow the path of those who came before you." Narrated by Abū Dāwūd. Al-Dārimī said: Al-Ḥakam ibn al-Mubārak informed us, ʿUmar ibn Yaḥyá narrated to us, saying: I heard my father narrating from his father who said: "We used to sit at the door of ʿAbd Allāh ibn Masʿūd before the morning prayer, and when he came out, we would walk with him to the mosque. Then Abū Mūsá al-Ashʿarī came to us and said: Has Abū ʿAbd al-Raḥmān come out to you yet? We said: No. So he sat down
