"Silsilah al-Aḥādīth al-Ḍaʿīfah" under number (997). In summary, the one among the four imams who benefited most from this ḥadīth is Aḥmad ibn Ḥanbal (may Allāh have mercy on them all), for he adhered to what the ḥadīth indicated in both matters, unlike others who applied it to one matter but not the other.

"Cover the vessel and tie the waterskin, for in the year there is a night when a plague descends. It does not pass by a vessel without a cover or a waterskin without a tie except that some of that plague descends into it." Narrated by Muslim (6/105) and Aḥmad (3/355) through the route of al-Qaʿqāʿ ibn Ḥakīm from Jābir ibn ʿAbd Allāh, raised [to the Prophet]. (Tie) means to secure their tops with a tie, which is the string used to secure a waterskin and the like. In another narration by Muslim and others: "Cover the vessel, tie the waterskin, close the door, and extinguish the lamp, for Satan does not untie a waterskin, open a door, or uncover a vessel. If one of you finds nothing but to place a stick across his vessel and mention the name of Allāh, let him do so, for the little creature (meaning the mouse) may set the house of its inhabitants on fire." The ḥadīth has other routes and wordings, which I have detailed in "Irwāʾ al-Ghalīl fī Takhrīj Aḥādīth Manār al-Sabīl" number (38), and it will be published soon, if Allāh wills.
