and it has a mursal supporting narration in a concise form with the wording: "Change the head of the old man with henna." It was recorded by Ibn Saʿd (5/452).

"When permission is sought to enter upon a man who is praying, his permission is in saying tasbīḥ, and when permission is sought to enter upon a woman who is praying, her permission is in clapping." It was recorded by al-Bayhaqī in "al-Sunan al-Kubrā" (2/247) through various chains from Ḥafṣ ibn ʿAbd Allāh, who narrated to me from Ibrāhīm ibn Ṭahmān, from Sulaimān al-Aʿmash, from Dhakwān, from Abū Hurayrah (raḍiya Allāhu ʿanhu) who said: The Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) said: and he mentioned it. I said: This isnād is authentic according to the criteria of al-Bukhārī. It was also recorded by Muslim, Abū ʿAwānah, and al-Tirmidhī through other chains from al-Aʿmash with a concise wording: "Tasbīḥ is for men, and clapping is for women." Al-Tirmidhī said: "It is ḥasan ṣaḥīḥ." It was also recorded by the two Shaykhs and others through different chains from Abū Hurayrah as a marfūʿ narration. It is in "Ṣaḥīḥ Abū Dāwūd" under number (867). I only recorded it with the first wording because it is detailed, and to clarify the authenticity of its isnād. Aḥmad recorded in "al-Musnad" (2/290) that Marwān ibn Muʿāwiyah al-Fazārī narrated to us that Yazīd ibn Kaysān sought permission to enter upon Sālim ibn Abī al-Jaʿd while he was praying, so he said tasbīḥ to me. When he finished, he said: The permission of a man when he is in prayer is to say tasbīḥ, and the permission of a woman is to clap. Marwān narrated to us that ʿAwf informed us from al-Ḥasan from the Prophet (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) similarly.
