- "Two cursed sounds: the sound of a flute at a blessing, and the sound of wailing at a calamity." Narrated by Abū Bakr al-Shāfiʿī in "al-Rubāʿiyyāt" (2/22/1): narrated to us by Muḥammad ibn Yūnus: narrated to us by al-Ḍaḥḥāk ibn Mukhallad narrated to us by Shabīb ibn Bishr narrated to us by Anas ibn Mālik as a marfūʿ ḥadīth. I said: This isnād [chain of transmission] has trustworthy men except for Muḥammad ibn Yūnus, who is al-Kudaymī, and he is accused of fabricating ḥadīth, but he has been followed in this narration, as it was also extracted by al-Ḍiyāʾ in "al-Mukhtārah" (131/1) through two other routes from al-Ḍaḥḥāk with it. Thus, the chain is ḥasan, if Allāh wills. Al-Haythamī said in "al-Majmaʿ" (3/13) following al-Mundhirī in "al-Targhīb" (4/177): "Narrated by al-Bazzār and its men are trustworthy." I said: And it has a supporting witness that strengthens it, extracted by al-Ḥākim (4/40) through the route of Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Abī Laylā from ʿAṭāʾ from Jābir from ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn ʿAwf who said: "The Prophet (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) took my hand, and I went with him to his son Ibrāhīm, who was breathing his last. The Prophet (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) took him in his lap until his soul departed. He then placed him down and wept. I said: Do you weep, O Messenger of Allāh, while you forbid weeping? He said: I did not forbid weeping, but I forbade two foolish and sinful sounds: a sound at a time of merriment and play, and the flutes of Satan, and a sound at a calamity of slapping faces and tearing clothes. This is mercy, and whoever does not show mercy will not be shown mercy. Were it not for the fact that it is a true promise, a truthful word, and that the first of us will join the last of us, we would have grieved for you more than this. We are indeed grieved for you, O Ibrāhīm. The eye weeps, the heart grieves, but we do not say anything displeasing to the Lord."
