- "O Fāṭimah, would it please you that people say: Fāṭimah, daughter of Muḥammad, has a chain of fire in her hand?!" It was recorded by al-Nasāʾī (2/285) and al-Ṭayālisī (p. 133, no. 990) and through his route by al-Ḥākim (3/152, 153) from Hishām from Yaḥyá ibn Abī Kathīr from Abū Salām from Abū Asmāʾ from Thawbān who said: "The daughter of Hubayrah came to the Prophet (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) with large gold rings in her hand, and the Prophet (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) began to strike her hand. She went to Fāṭimah to complain to her. Thawbān said: The Prophet (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) entered upon Fāṭimah while I was with him, and she had taken a gold chain from her neck and said: This was gifted to me by Abū Ḥasan, and the chain was in her hand. The Prophet (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) said: (and he mentioned the ḥadīth), then he left without sitting down. Fāṭimah took the chain, sold it, and bought a slave with it and freed him. This reached the Prophet (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) and he said: Praise be to Allāh who saved Fāṭimah from the fire." Al-Ḥākim and likewise al-Dhahabī said: "Authentic according to the criteria of al-Shaykhayn." They said this, but Abū Salām, whose name is Mamṭūr, and his teacher Abū Asmāʾ, whose name is ʿAmr ibn Murthad, were not recorded by al-Bukhārī in his Ṣaḥīḥ, but he did narrate from them in "al-Adab al-Mufrad." Moreover, there is a break in the chain between Yaḥyá and Abū Salām, as it is said he did not hear from him, and Yaḥyá is known to practice tadlīs, as described by al-ʿUqaylī and Ibn Ḥibbān. I say: However, it was narrated by al-Nasāʾī (2/284) and Aḥmad (5/278) through two routes from Yaḥyá who said: Zayd ibn Salām told us that his grandfather—meaning Abū Salām—told him that Abū Asmāʾ narrated it to him. This is a connected, authentic chain. Aḥmad added after his statement: striking her hand: "Would it please you that Allāh places rings of fire in your hand?!" And in it, he (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) severely admonished Fāṭimah.
