"I have been commanded to fight the people until they say: There is no deity but Allāh. Whoever says there is no deity but Allāh, his wealth and his life are protected from me, except by its right, and his reckoning is with Allāh." This is a mutawātir ḥadīth, as stated by al-Suyūṭī in "al-Jāmiʿ al-Ṣaghīr," as it has been reported by a group of Companions with similar wording. The first: Abū Hurayrah, and there are several chains from him: 1 - al-Zuhrī informed me, ʿUbayd Allāh ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿUtbah from Abū Hurayrah said: "When the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) passed away and Abū Bakr succeeded him, and some Arabs apostatized, ʿUmar ibn al-Khaṭṭāb said to Abū Bakr: How will you fight the people when the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) said: (and he mentioned it), Abū Bakr said: By Allāh, I will fight whoever differentiates between prayer and zakāh, for zakāh is the right of wealth. By Allāh, if they withhold from me even a rope they used to give to the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam), I would fight them for withholding it. ʿUmar ibn al-Khaṭṭāb said: By Allāh, it was only when I saw that Allāh had opened Abū Bakr's chest for fighting that I knew it was the truth." It was narrated by al-Bukhārī (3/206, 12/232-234, 13/206), Muslim (1/38), Abū Dāwūd (1/243), al-Nasāʾī (2/161), al-Tirmidhī (2/100 Būlāq edition), and Aḥmad (1/19, 35, 47-48, 2/423, 528) from various chains from him. 2 - Also from al-Zuhrī, from Saʿīd ibn al-Musayyib from him. It was narrated by Muslim (1/39) and al-Nasāʾī (2/162). 3 - From al-Aʿmash from Abū Ṣāliḥ from him. It was narrated by Muslim, al-Nasāʾī, al-Tirmidhī, and Ibn Mājah (2/475)
