- "Face this people until you are at their highest point, and do not let them deceive you tonight." This is a portion of a ḥadīth from Sahl ibn al-Ḥanẓaliyyah, who narrated that they traveled with the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) on the day of Ḥunayn. They continued traveling until evening when the prayer time approached with the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam). A horseman came and said: "O Messenger of Allāh, I went ahead of you until I reached such and such mountain, and I found Hawāzin gathered with their women, livestock, and sheep at Ḥunayn." The Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) smiled and said: "That is the Muslims' booty tomorrow, if Allāh wills." Then he said: "Who will guard us tonight?" Anas ibn Abī Murthad al-Ghanawī said: "I will, O Messenger of Allāh." He said: "Then mount." So he mounted his horse and came to the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam), who said: "the ḥadīth." When morning came, the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) went to his prayer place, performed two rakʿahs, and then said: "Have you sensed your horseman?" They said: "O Messenger of Allāh, we have not sensed him." Then the call to prayer was made, and while the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) was praying, he kept looking towards the people until he finished his prayer and said: "Rejoice, for your horseman has come." We looked through the trees and saw him coming until he stood before the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) and greeted him. He said: "I went until I was at the highest point of this people as the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) commanded me. When morning came, I ascended both sides of the valley and looked, but I saw no one." The Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) said to him: "Did you descend during the night?" He said: "No, except to pray or fulfill a need." The Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) said: "You have fulfilled your duty, and you are not required to do anything after this." It was narrated by Abū Dāwūd (1/391-392) and al-Ḥākim (2/83-84) through the chain of Abū Tūbah al-Rabīʿ ibn Nāfiʿ al-Ḥalabī, who reported from Muʿāwiyah ibn Salām, who informed me from Zayd ibn Salām, who narrated from Abū Kabshah al-Salūlī that he heard it from Sahl ibn al-Ḥanẓaliyyah. Al-Ḥākim said:
