and Rabīʿah ibn Laqīṭ was deemed trustworthy by Ibn Ḥibbān and al-ʿAjlī, and a group narrated from him. Thus, the chain is good—if Allāh wills. The wording of the ḥadīth in the translation from the narration of Muslim is longer than what we have presented; it is from Abū Muslim al-Khawlānī who said: The beloved trustworthy one told me—he is beloved to me, and to me, he is trustworthy—ʿAwf ibn Mālik al-Ashjaʿī said: We were with the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam), nine or eight or seven [of us], and he said: "Will you not pledge allegiance to the Messenger of Allāh?!" We were newly pledged, so we said: We have pledged allegiance to you, O Messenger of Allāh! Then he said: "Will you not pledge allegiance to the Messenger of Allāh?!" We said: We have pledged allegiance to you, O Messenger of Allāh! Then he said: "Will you not pledge allegiance to the Messenger of Allāh?!" He said: So we extended our hands and said: We have pledged allegiance to you, O Messenger of Allāh! Upon what shall we pledge allegiance to you? He said: "That you worship Allāh and do not associate anything with Him, the five prayers, and that you obey—and he whispered a hidden word—and that you do not ask people for anything." Indeed, I saw some of those people, if one of their whips fell, they would not ask anyone to hand it to them. *
