I had previously asserted the first opinion, following the lead of the ḥāfiẓ al-Haythamī, in my book "Takhrīj Ṣifat Ṣalāt al-Nabī (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam)," but then I reconsidered due to the investigation I mentioned. Indeed, there is another path for the ḥadīth from Ibn ʿUmar that strengthens it. It is narrated by Surayj ibn Yūnus, who said: Qurān ibn Tamām narrated to us from ʿUbayd Allāh ibn ʿUmar from Nāfiʿ from him, who said: The Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) said: "Whoever among you can prostrate should do so, and whoever cannot, should not raise anything to his forehead to prostrate on, but should gesture with his head during his bowing and prostration." It was recorded by al-Ṭabarānī in "al-Awsaṭ" (1/43/1 - from his additions): Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn Bakīr narrated to us, Surayj ibn Yūnus narrated it. And he said: "No one narrated it from ʿUbayd Allāh except Qurān, and Surayj was unique in narrating it." I say: He is trustworthy, from the men of the two Shaykhs, and so are those above him except for Qurān, whose name begins with a ḍammah and has a shaddah on the rāʾ. He is truthful but may err, as mentioned in "al-Taqrīb." Thus, the isnād is good, except that I did not find a biography for Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn Bakīr, the shaykh of al-Ṭabarānī, but it appears he was not unique in this, as indicated by the statement "Surayj was unique in narrating it." Perhaps for this reason, the ḥāfiẓ al-Haythamī said (2/149): "It was narrated by al-Ṭabarānī in 'al-Awsaṭ,' and its men are trustworthy; there is nothing said about them that would be harmful. And Allāh knows best."
