I said: This is a good isnād, its narrators are trustworthy, the narrators of the two Shaykhs [al-Bukhārī and Muslim]; except for this al-Jārūdī, and al-Khaṭīb mentioned him in "al-Tārīkh" saying (2/277): "He was from Basra, came to Baghdad and narrated there from ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz ibn Abī Ḥāzim. Aḥmad ibn ʿAlī al-Khazzāz, al-Ḥasan ibn ʿAlīl al-ʿAnazī, and ʿAbd Allāh ibn Muḥammad al-Baghawī narrated from him, and he was truthful." Ibn Ḥibbān mentioned him in "al-Thiqāt," and said: "He narrated from [ibn] Abī Ḥāzim, and ʿAbd Allāh ibn Muḥammad al-Baghawī narrated to us from him." It is strange that al-Haythamī did not recognize him, as he said in "Majmaʿ al-Zawāʾid" (8/61): "It was narrated by al-Ṭabarānī in 'al-Awsaṭ,' and in it is someone I do not recognize!" Even though he mentioned him in his book "Tartīb Thiqāt Ibn Ḥibbān," he did not remember him; so glory be to the One who encompasses all things in knowledge! As for al-Munāwī; he agreed with al-Haythamī on his previous statement, and summarized it in "al-Taysīr" saying: "And in it is an unknown [narrator]!" This is not good from him; because the lack of recognition by al-Haythamī does not necessitate that he is unknown, and the example is before you! So take heed. There is a corroborating narration for the ḥadīth from ʿAmr ibn Shuʿayb from his father from his grandfather that the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) said: "Do not sit between two men except with their permission." It was recorded by Abū Dāwūd (4844), and its isnād is good.
