originally, and likewise the rest of the six [books]. Yes, he is a trustworthy and virtuous person as al-Khaṭīb mentioned in his biography (6/25). Therefore, the ḥadīth is authentic only; it is not according to the criteria of the two Shaykhs as al-Ḥākim claimed, nor is it weak as the words of al-Ḥāfiẓ al-Ishbīlī might suggest. - "The believer is not one who taunts, curses, is obscene, or vulgar." It was recorded by Imām Aḥmad (1/404-405) and Ibn Abī Shaybah in "Kitāb al-Īmān" (no. 80 in my verification). They said: Muḥammad ibn Sābiq narrated to us, Israel narrated from al-Aʿmash from Ibrāhīm from ʿAlqamah from ʿAbd Allāh ibn Masʿūd who said: The Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) said it, and he mentioned it. Through the route of Ibn Abī Shaybah, it was recorded by al-Bukhārī in "al-Adab al-Mufrad" (332), and it was narrated by al-Tirmidhī (1/357), al-Ḥākim (1/12), Abū Nuʿaym in "al-Ḥilyah" (4/235, 5/58), and al-Khaṭīb (5/339) through two other routes from Ibn Sābiq with it. Al-Tirmidhī said: "A good and rare ḥadīth, and it has been narrated from ʿAbd Allāh through other routes." Al-Ḥākim said: "Authentic according to the criteria of the two Shaykhs." Al-Dhahabī agreed with him. I said: It is as they said, but it has been criticized. Al-Munāwī said in "Fayḍ al-Qadīr" after quoting al-Tirmidhī's grading of it: "He did not clarify the impediment to its authenticity." Ibn al-Qaṭṭān said: "It should not be considered authentic because it includes Muḥammad ibn Sābiq al-Baghdādī, who is weak, even if he is well-known, and some may have deemed him trustworthy."
