"It was narrated by Sufyān al-Thawrī, Zuhayr, and Isrāʾīl from Abū Isḥāq in a similar manner." I said: al-Bukhārī narrated it from them, and also from Shuʿbah (240, 520, 2934, 3185, 3854, and 2960) in both extended and abridged forms, and likewise Muslim narrated from them except Isrāʾīl. It was also narrated by al-Nasāʾī (1/58) in "al-Kubrā" (8668 and 8669), Ibn Ḥibbān (6536), Aḥmad (1/393 and 417), al-Bazzār (2398 and 2399), al-Ṭabarānī in "al-Muʿjam al-Awsaṭ" (762 - Dār al-Ḥaramayn), and al-Bayhaqī as well in "al-Sunan al-Kubrā" (9/7-8), some through the mentioned chains and some through other chains. In the ḥadīth of Sufyān as narrated by Muslim and others: he used to prefer three, saying: "O Allāh! Deal with Quraysh, O Allāh..."

(When he spoke a word, he would repeat it three times so that it would be understood from him, and when he came upon a people and greeted them, he would greet them three times.) Narrated by al-Bukhārī (94, 95, and 6244), al-Tirmidhī (2723 and 3640), and "al-Shamāʾil" (120/192 - Mukhtaṣar al-Shamāʾil), and Abū al-Shaykh in "Akhlaq al-Nabī ﷺ" (83), and Aḥmad (3/213 and 221) from the path of ʿAbd Allāh ibn al-Muthannā who said: Thumāmah ibn ʿAbd Allāh narrated to us from Anas from the Prophet ﷺ: that he used to... and the wording is from al-Bukhārī, and from him al-Baghawī in "Sharḥ al-Sunnah" (1/304/141), and he said: "This is a ṣaḥīḥ ḥadīth, he said: His greeting three times is upon seeking permission if not permitted once or twice, he greets three times, then departs as mentioned in the ḥadīth: seeking permission is three times."
