to him in commentary, and in filling the lines with additional volumes, pages, and numbers, taken from indexes without any notable benefit! And Allāh is the one whose help is sought. *

(Whoever lifts a cover and peers into a house before being granted permission, and sees the private parts of its inhabitants, has committed an act he is not permitted to do. If, when he inserted his gaze, a man had confronted him and gouged out his eye, he would not be blamed. However, if a man passes by a door without a cover and it is not closed, and he looks, there is no sin upon him; the sin is upon the inhabitants of the house.) It was recorded by al-Tirmidhī (2707): Qutaybah narrated to us: Ibn Lahīʿah narrated to us from ʿUbayd Allāh ibn Abī Jaʿfar from Abū ʿAbd al-Raḥmān al-Ḥubulī from Abū Dharr who said: The Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) said: ... and he mentioned it. It was also recorded by Aḥmad (5/181) through two other chains from Ibn Lahīʿah with the same content. Al-Tirmidhī said: "This ḥadīth is strange; we do not know it except from the narration of Ibn Lahīʿah." I say: He is truthful and reliable; however, he had been afflicted with poor memory. Those who narrated from him before that, or from his book, their ḥadīth is authentic, among them are the ʿAbbādilah, and some have added others, like Qutaybah ibn Saʿīd; as has been reported from al-Ḥāfiẓ al-Dhahabī more than once, and this is from his narration as you see, so the ḥadīth is strange but authentic. I had previously weakened it in some of the older verifications like "Ghayat al-Marām" (423), before I came across the benefit mentioned by al-Dhahabī, and therefore, I have since tried to be attentive to it in all the ḥadīths he mentions
