better than what he did, and a cause for the implementation of the ḥadd on him. And Allāh knows best and is most wise." Al-Ḥāfiẓ transmitted it in "al-Fatḥ" (12/125) from him, and he affirmed it. In summary, the ḥadīth applies to someone like Māʿiz who was remorseful for what he did and was not accustomed to adultery; he should be covered and not exposed. In contrast, someone who is not [remorseful] and whose matter has become public and scandalous, it is not permissible to cover for him, and his matter should be referred to the judge to implement the ruling of the wise lawgiver on him.
