it was recorded by Ibn Abī Shaybah (1/186): Yaḥyá ibn Abī Bukayr narrated to us, saying: Shuʿbah narrated from Abū Bakr ibn Ḥafṣ who said: I heard ʿUrwah ibn al-Zubayr from ʿĀʾishah who said: ... and he mentioned it. This isnād is authentic, all its narrators are trustworthy according to the criteria of the two Shaykhs [al-Bukhārī and Muslim]. And before it, he recorded: Ibn Idrīs narrated to us from Fiṭr who said: I said to ʿAṭāʾ: ʿIkrimah says: Ibn ʿAbbās said: The scripture preceded the two leather socks? ʿAṭāʾ said: ʿIkrimah lied! I saw Ibn ʿAbbās wiping over them. Al-Bayhaqī also recorded it (1/273) through another route from Fiṭr ibn Khalīfah with it; except that he said: ʿIkrimah lied! Ibn ʿAbbās used to say: Wipe over the two leather socks; even if you come out of the restroom. Al-Bayhaqī said: "It is possible that Ibn ʿAbbās said what ʿIkrimah narrated from him, then when the confirmed report reached him about the Prophet (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) wiping after the revelation of al-Māʾidah, he said what ʿAṭāʾ said." I said: And in this is an indication from him of the authenticity of what ʿIkrimah narrated from Ibn ʿAbbās, otherwise; he would not have interpreted it, and that is the correct view in my opinion; because the isnād of Ibn Abī Shaybah to ʿAṭāʾ and ʿIkrimah is good according to al-Bukhārī's criteria. And ʿAṭāʾ's statement: ʿIkrimah lied ... means: he erred, similar to the saying of the Prophet (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam): "Abū al-Sanābil lied." And supporting this is what was also recorded by Ibn Abī Shaybah from the route of Saʿīd ibn Jubayr who said: Ibn ʿAbbās said: I do not care whether I wipe over the two leather socks or wipe over this camel of mine
