she said: I cannot do this, O Messenger of Allāh! so he said: ... and he mentioned it. The context is from Aḥmad. I said: This isnād is weak due to the condition of Rushdīn, who is known for his weakness; and similarly Zubān, who is Ibn Fāʾid. Al-Mundhirī said in "al-Targhīb" (2/178/32): "Aḥmad narrated it from the narration of Rushdīn ibn Saʿd—who is considered reliable by him—and there is no harm in his ḥadīth in follow-ups and softening narratives!" Thus he said! And he overlooked its weakness due to (Zubān). Al-Haythamī followed him in this; he said (5/274): "Aḥmad and al-Ṭabarānī narrated it, and in it is Rushdīn ibn Saʿd, whom Aḥmad considered reliable, but a group weakened him!" I said: The weakening is the relied upon opinion; based on the principle: (criticism takes precedence over endorsement); especially since it is the view of the majority! Moreover, their attribution to Aḥmad that he considered him reliable in such a general sense gives the impression that he did not weaken him as well, which is not the case, for the narrations from him are varied, and they are: The first: what they mentioned about reliability, which is the narration of Ibn Shāhīn in his book "al-Thiqāt" (129/352) from his teacher al-Baghawī from Aḥmad who said: "I hope he is reliable, or sound in ḥadīth." But Ibn ʿAdī narrated it in "al-Kāmil" (3/149) from his teacher also al-Baghawī, and he did not mention: "reliable, or"! The second: the narration of al-Maymūnī who said: I heard Abū ʿAbd Allāh—meaning: Aḥmad ibn Ḥanbal—say:
