(Welcome to the seeker of knowledge. Indeed, the seeker of knowledge is surrounded by angels and they shade him with their wings, then they stack upon each other until they reach the lowest heaven, out of love for what he seeks). It was recorded by al-Ṭabarānī in "al-Muʿjam al-Kabīr" (8/64/7347), Ibn ʿAdī in "al-Kāmil" (6/331), and Ibn ʿAbd al-Barr in "Jāmiʿ Bayān al-ʿIlm" (1/32) from al-Ṣaʿq ibn Ḥazn: narrated to us by ʿAlī ibn al-Ḥakam al-Bunānī from al-Minhāl ibn ʿAmr from Zirr ibn Ḥubaysh from ʿAbd Allāh ibn Masʿūd (raḍiya Allāhu ʿanhu) who said: Ṣafwān ibn ʿAssāl al-Murādī narrated that he came to the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) while he was reclining in the mosque on a red cloak, and he said to him: O Messenger of Allāh! I have come to seek knowledge, and he said: ... and he mentioned it. Ṣafwān said: O Messenger of Allāh! We constantly travel between Mecca and Medina, so advise us about wiping over the leather socks. The Messenger of Allāh said to him: "Three days for the traveler, and one day and night for the resident." I said: This is a good chain of narration, its men are trustworthy, the men of "al-Ṣaḥīḥ," and there is some discussion about some of them that does not harm [the narration]. Al-Mundhirī said in "al-Targhīb" (1/54/4): "It was narrated by Aḥmad, and al-Ṭabarānī with a good chain of narration—and the wording is his—and Ibn Ḥibbān in his "Ṣaḥīḥ," and al-Ḥākim, and he said: 'The chain of narration is authentic'..." I said: It was recorded by al-Ḥākim (1/100-101) through various chains from Zirr ibn Ḥubaysh, including this chain of al-Ṣaʿq, but he did not convey its wording, and he mentioned in its chain ʿAbd Allāh ibn Masʿūd, and he did not mention him in another narration of his from the chain of (ʿĀrim), which is the narration of Ibn ʿAbd al-Barr, and it is more authentic
