It was recorded by al-Tirmidhī (2541), and by Nuʿaym ibn Ḥammād in "Zawāʾid al-Zuhd" (126/416), and by Aḥmad (1/169 and 171), and by al-Ṭabarānī in "al-Muʿjam al-Awsaṭ" (9/407/8875), and by al-Baghawī in "Sharḥ al-Sunnah" (15/214/4377) through various chains, one of which is: ʿAbd Allāh ibn al-Mubārak: Ibn Lahīʿah informed us from Yazīd ibn Abī Ḥabīb from Dāwūd ibn ʿĀmir ... and al-Tirmidhī and al-Baghawī said: "A strange ḥadīth!" Thus it appeared in both of them! Al-Mundhirī reported in "al-Targhīb" from al-Tirmidhī (4/277/3) that he said: "A good strange ḥadīth." He added the word "good." And this is appropriate for the state of its isnād; for its narrators are all trustworthy, the men of Muslim, except for Ibn Lahīʿah, and his ḥadīth is authentic if it is from the narration of one of the ʿAbādilah, and this is such as you see. I had overlooked this fact in my commentary on "al-Mishkāt" (no. 5637) for reasons mentioned in the introduction, and that was about forty years ago, and to Allāh belongs the outcome of matters. The three commentators on "al-Targhīb" (4/470) followed me in this oversight, so they weakened the ḥadīth, even though they see that I authenticated it in "Ṣaḥīḥ al-Jāmiʿ al-Ṣaghīr" (no. 5127/first legal edition), which I authored a few years after the aforementioned date. Brother ʿAlī Riḍā noticed all of this in his commentary on "Ṣifat al-Jannah" (1/81); he was fair to me, may Allāh reward him well, and did not exploit the oversight as many of the innovators do, and some of the envious, spiteful, ignorant ones. And among the ignorance of those three and their imitation, and their lack of benefit from what they transmit through indexes: is that they attributed it through "the encyclopedia" to "al-Bukhārī in "al-Tārīkh al-Kabīr"
