- (Indeed, modesty, chastity, and eloquence—eloquence of the tongue, not of the heart—and understanding (1) are part of faith. They increase in the Hereafter and decrease in this world, and what they increase in the Hereafter is more than what they decrease in this world. Indeed, miserliness, obscenity, and vulgarity are part of hypocrisy. It was recorded by Yaʿqūb ibn Sufyān al-Fasawī in "al-Maʿrifah," who said (1/311): Muḥammad ibn Abī al-Sarī narrated to us: Bakr ibn Bishr al-ʿAsqalānī narrated to me: ʿAbd al-Ḥamīd ibn Sawwār narrated to me: Iyās ibn Muʿāwiyah ibn Qurrah al-Muzanī narrated from his father from his grandfather Qurrah al-Muzanī who said: We were with the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam), and modesty was mentioned in his presence.
