Ibn Abī Masʿūd, and he mentioned that his kunya was Abū Isḥāq, the secretary of al-Wāqidī, and said: "He narrated from ʿAbbād ibn al-ʿAwām, ʿAbd Allāh ibn Idrīs, and Khalaf ibn Khalīfah al-Ashjaʿī. Ibrāhīm ibn ʿAbd al-Razzāq, ʿAbbās al-Dūrī, and ʿAbd al-Karīm ibn al-Haytham al-ʿĀqūlī narrated from him." And this ʿAbd al-Karīm is a reliable and firm narrator, as mentioned in "al-Tārīkh" (6/78). Then he narrated with his chain from Ibn al-Sakan: "Ismāʿīl ibn Abī Masʿūd, a trustworthy Baghdadi, narrated to us." I said: And this is a noteworthy benefit to add to "al-Lisān"; for it did not mention his reliability except from Ibn Ḥibbān, and he mentioned him in the fourth level of "al-Thiqāt" (8/95), and said: "Abū Shaybah ibn Abī Bakr ibn Abī Shaybah and ʿUthmān ibn Khurrazād al-Anṭākī narrated from him, and he is rare." I said: And four others narrated from him, three of whom are reliable. Al-Khaṭīb mentioned two of them, and the third is Ibn Saʿd as you see, so he is trustworthy, God willing; as Ibn Ḥibbān and Ibn al-Sakan said. Moreover, he was corroborated by ʿAmr ibn Muḥammad al-ʿAnqazī in "Sunan al-Nasāʾī," and from him by al-Ṭabarānī in "al-Muʿjam al-Kabīr" (12/11), and in "Maʿrifat al-Ṣaḥābah" by Abū Nuʿaym (1/270/1), and by Dāwūd ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān in al-Bazzār as well (no. 2699); al-Haythamī did not provide its wording, but he mentioned it after the ḥadīth of the biography, then said: "I said: He mentioned something similar." I said: And its chain is authentic according to the criteria of the two Shaykhs. Al-Ḥāfiẓ Ibn Kathīr provided its wording in his history "al-Bidāyah" (4/128), and added at its end:
