al-Bukhārī in his "Tārīkh," Ibn Jarīr, Ibn al-Mundhir, Ibn Shāhīn, Ibn Qāniʿ, al-Ṭabarānī, and Ibn Mardawayh narrated through the route of Mūsá ibn ʿUlayy ibn Rabāḥ from his father from his grandfather: that the Prophet (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) said to him: "What is your child?" He said: O Messenger of Allāh! What could be born to me?! Either a boy or a girl. He said: "Whom does it resemble?" He said: O Messenger of Allāh! Whom could it resemble?! Either its father or its mother. Then the Prophet (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) said at that moment: "Stop! Do not say this, for when the sperm settles in the womb, Allāh brings forth every lineage between it and Adam, and He forms its creation in the image of one of those forms. Have you not read this verse in the Book of Allāh: (In whatever form He willed, He assembled you) (Sūrah al-Infiṭār, verse 8); from your offspring between you and Adam?!" I said: And he remained silent about it, which was not good; because it is from the narration of Muṭahhar ibn al-Haytham al-Ṭāʾī: narrated to us by Mūsá ibn ʿUlayy ibn Rabāḥ! With it. This is how it is with Ibn Jarīr in his "Tafsīr" (30/56), and al-Ṭabarānī in "al-Muʿjam al-Kabīr" (5/72/4624). Al-Haythamī said (7/135): "It was narrated by al-Ṭabarānī, and in it is Muṭahhar ibn al-Haytham, who is abandoned." And likewise, the ḥāfiẓ said in "al-Taqrīb." And it was mentioned in "al-Tahdhīb" from Abū Saʿīd ibn Yūnus that he said: "Abandoned in ḥadīth, he narrated from Mūsá ibn ʿUlayy from his father from his grandfather a rejected narration."
