Abū Zurʿah and Ibn ʿAdī said about him: "There is no harm in him." Ibn Ḥibbān mentioned him in "al-Thiqāt" (7/174). I said: someone like him is considered reliable in ḥadīth if he does not contradict [others]. here, he has confused this authentic ḥadīth with another ḥadīth, which involves the story of ʿUmar entering upon the Prophet (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) while he was on the woven bed... the ḥadīth, which is in "al-Ṣaḥīḥayn" from the narration of Ibn ʿAbbās from ʿUmar in the long ḥadīth about the story of the two who conspired against him (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam). It is referenced in "al-Taʿlīq al-Raghīb" (4/114). al-Hilālī erred by linking this story of ʿUmar with the story of the finger, making them one story, and implying that the injury was severe enough to require being carried on a bed...! Ibn ʿAdī narrated (5/52-53) the story of ʿUmar alone from the narration of this al-Hilālī from al-Aswad from Jundub: that ʿUmar entered upon the Prophet (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) while he was lying on a woven mat... the ḥadīth; and this is the correct version; the story of ʿUmar has no connection to the ḥadīth of the chapter. Isrāʾīl—who is Ibn Yūnus ibn Abī Isḥāq al-Sabīʿī—contradicted all those reliable narrators, saying: from al-Aswad ibn Qays from Jundub, who said: when Abū Bakr (raḍiya Allāhu ʿanhu) went with the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) to the cave, and Abū Bakr said to him: Do not enter the cave, O Messenger of Allāh, until I check it. So Abū Bakr entered the cave, and something struck his hands, and he began to wipe the blood from his finger while saying: Are you anything but a finger... etc
