a man from the Anṣār [named Abū Ṭalḥah] said: I will, and he took him to his wife and said: Honor the guest of the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) [do not withhold anything], she said: [By Allāh!] We only have food for the children! He said: Prepare your food, fix your lamp, and put your children to sleep when they want dinner, so she prepared her food, fixed her lamp, and put her children to sleep, then she got up as if she were fixing her lamp and turned it off, and they pretended to eat; [and the guest ate], and they spent the night hungry. In the morning, he went to the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) and mentioned it. The narration is from "al-Adab al-Mufrad," with additions from Muslim; except for some parts which are from al-Bukhārī. al-Tirmidhī said: "A good authentic ḥadīth." Yazīd ibn Kaysān followed it up from Abū Ḥāzim with a very brief version without the story. It was recorded by Ibn Abī ʿĀṣim in "al-Sunnah" (1/250/570). (Important Note): al-Bayhaqī mentioned in "al-Asmāʾ"—just before and after this ḥadīth—quoting al-Khaṭṭābī who said: "al-Bukhārī said: The meaning of laughter is mercy"! I say that this attribution to al-Bukhārī is questionable; because it is a disconnected, suspended narration, and neither al-Khaṭṭābī nor al-Bayhaqī mentioned their source for it, and because the most knowledgeable about al-Bukhārī—namely al-Ḥāfiẓ al-ʿAsqalānī—did not find it; as he said afterwards: "I did not see that in the copies of al-Bukhārī that we have." What further confirms that this is not established from al-Bukhārī is that we know for certain that he is among the great imams..
