"and it was mentioned in the narration of al-Bayhaqī and others: 'The Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) commanded me to mourn for three days,' but its error is evident." I have not found this narration with al-Bayhaqī or any other early sources, and Allāh knows best. Indeed, the wording of Aḥmad's narration conveys its meaning, for he said: "Wear the mourning garment for three days, then do as you wish." What I have established is the wording of al-Ṭabarī and Abū Nuʿaym. Among such distortions is what appears in "Majmaʿ al-Zawāʾid" (3/17), attributed to Aḥmad's narration: "Mourn!" Yet it does not exist in his printed "Musnad"! More astonishing than all of this is that the esteemed brother Ḥamdī al-Salafī included in his valuable index "Murshid al-Muḥtār" (2/32) the ḥadīth with its correct wording: "Mourn..." attributed to Aḥmad with the number I previously mentioned (6/438), but it is not there—in the Maymaniyyah edition—except with the wording I mentioned earlier: "Wear the mourning garment..."! *
