however, the ḥadīth is authentic; it has been transmitted through a connected chain from Dāwūd ibn Abī Hind, from al-Shaʿbī, from ʿAlqamah, from Ibn Masʿūd, in a marfūʿ form with the wording: "The caller of the jinn came to me, so I went with him, and I recited the Qurʾān to them" ... and it includes a story. It was recorded by Muslim, Abū ʿAwānah, and Ibn Ḥibbān as well (2/350-351 and 8/77) among others, and it is included in "al-Ḍaʿīfah" (1038) due to an anomalous addition found in the marfūʿ part of the story, and part of it is included in "al-Irwāʾ" (1/85/46). It was also recorded by al-Bayhaqī in "al-Sunan" (1/9) through the chain of Qays ibn al-Rabīʿ: from Abū Fazārah al-ʿAbasī, from Abū Zayd, from Ibn Masʿūd with a similar narration, and it includes the ḥadīth of the chapter. This chain is weak, and it contains a rejected addition with the wording: "a good date, and pure water." Therefore, I included it in "Ḍaʿīf Abī Dāwūd" (no. 11). The story has also been narrated with different wordings that do not include the ḥadīth of the chapter, but they mention that it took place in "al-Ḥajūn": among them is what Abū al-Jawzāʾ narrated from Ibn Masʿūd, who said: I went with the Prophet (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) on the night of the jinn until we reached (al-Ḥajūn), where he drew a line for me, then he went forward to them ... the ḥadīth. It was recorded by al-Bayhaqī in "Dalāʾil al-Nubuwwah" (2/231). The men of its chain are trustworthy, so it is authentic except that it was said: "Abū al-Jawzāʾ—whose name is Aws ibn ʿAbd Allāh al-Rabīʿī—did not hear from Ibn Masʿūd."
