in his "Musnad" (1/99/175) from various routes from Muḥammad ibn Bakr from al-Ṣalt ibn Bahrām [: al-Ḥasan narrated to us: Jundub al-Bajalī narrated to us—in this mosque—that Ḥudhayfah narrated to him saying: The Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) said: ... and he mentioned it. Ibn Kathīr said: "This isnād is good, and al-Ṣalt ibn Bahrām was among the trustworthy Kūfans, and he was not accused of anything except Irjāʾ, and he was deemed trustworthy by Aḥmad, Ibn Maʿīn, and others." I say: There is no doubt that al-Ṣalt ibn Bahrām is trustworthy, but is he the narrator of this ḥadīth from al-Ḥasan—who is al-Baṣrī?! This is questionable, even though Ibn Kathīr affirmed it, following Ibn Ḥibbān in this, as he said in the biography of al-Ṣalt ibn Bahrām in his "Thiqāt" (6/471): "A Kūfan, rare in ḥadīth, narrates from a group of the Tābiʿīn, narrated by the people of Kūfah, and he is the one who narrates from al-Ḥasan, narrated by Muḥammad ibn Bakr al-Muqriʾ al-Kūfī—not al-Barasānī—and whoever said it is al-Ṣalt ibn Mihrān; he has erred, it is indeed al-Ṣalt ibn Bahrām." So he said! And al-Ḥāfiẓ followed up by saying in "al-Tahdhīb": "This which he rejected was affirmed by al-Bukhārī from his teacher ʿAlī ibn al-Madīnī, and he is more knowledgeable about his teacher, and al-Bukhārī said in 'al-Tārīkh': ʿAlī said to me: Muḥammad ibn Bakr al-Barasānī narrated to us from al-Ṣalt ibn Mihrān: al-Ḥasan al-Baṣrī narrated to me ... and he mentioned a ḥadīth." I said: It is this, and in what both al-Ḥāfiẓ and Ibn Ḥibbān mentioned, there is something noteworthy: Firstly, in the printed version of "al-Tārīkh," there is no mention of: "al-Barasānī, ibn Mihrān, al-Baṣrī"; it appears that this was mentioned by al-Ḥāfiẓ on his own as clarification, not as narration. Secondly, Ibn Ḥibbān's assertion that Muḥammad ibn Bakr, the narrator from al-Ṣalt, is not al-Barasānī, I do not know what his basis for this is?!
