then it occurred to me something that undermines this aspect, which is that Ibn Abī Shaybah did not attribute it in his "Muṣannaf"; for he said (2/233): "Abū Usāmah narrated to us from Hishām from Muḥammad who said: 'I did not see him begin a voluntary prayer except with two rakʿahs.'" Thus, he halted it at Muḥammad ibn Sīrīn. Then I found a supporting narration for Ibn Abī Shaybah that is elevated, as al-Tirmidhī said in "al-Shamāʾil" (2/88- with the commentary of al-Qārī), and from him al-Baghawī (4/17/079) - and he authenticated it: "Muḥammad ibn al-ʿAlāʾ narrated to us: Abū Usāmah informed us of it"; thus the aforementioned undermining is negated, and the preference for halting remains for the two reasons mentioned: The first is that Hishām was followed by Ayyūb and others in halting it, and no one, as far as I know, followed him in elevating it. The second is that we did not find a corroborating witness for it, while we found an elevated narration from his action (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam). Muslim and others narrated it from ʿĀʾishah, and it is recorded there like the ḥadīth of the chapter. *
ثم بدا لي ما يقدح في هذا الوجه، وهو أن ابن أبي شيبة لم يسنده في "مصنفه "؛ فإنه قال (٢/٢٣٣) : حدثنا أبو أسامة عن هشام عن محمد قال: "ما رأيته افتتح صلاة تطوع إلا بركعتين ". فقد أوقفه على محمد بن سيرين. ثم وجدت لابن أبي شيبة متابعاً مرفوعاً، فقال الترمذي في "الشمائل " (٢/٨٨- بشرح القاري) ، وعنه البغوي (٤/١٧/٠٧٩) - وصححه-: حدثنا محمد ابن العلاء: أنبأنا أبو أسامة به؛ فانتفى القدح المذكور، وبقي ترجيح الوقف على السببين المشار إليهما: أحدهما: أن هشاماً قد توبع من أيوب وغيره على وقفه، ولم يتابعه أحد- فيما علمت- على رفعه. والآخر: أنه لم نجد له شاهداً، ووجدنا للمرفوع من فعله ﷺ. أخرجه مسلم وغيره عن عائشة، وهو مخرج هناك مثل حديث الترجمة. *
(If Allāh were to hold me and ʿĪsá accountable for our sins (in another narration: for what these two have earned - meaning: the thumb and the one next to it -), He would punish us and would not (in another: and did not) wrong us in the least). It was recorded by Ibn Ḥibbān in his "Ṣaḥīḥ" (2/656 and 658) - with both narrations -, and by Abū Nuʿaym in "al-Ḥilyah" (8/132) - with the other narration - through various chains from Ḥusayn ibn ʿAlī al-Juʿfī from Fuḍayl ibn ʿIyāḍ from Hishām ibn Ḥassān from Ibn Sīrīn from Abū Hurayrah who said:
