as for the statement of Ibn Shawdhab: "It was seen... etc."; it is muʿḍal [a type of weak ḥadīth] because he did not meet Salmān, who died in the year 106 or 107. The ḥadīth has also been reported from Anas and al-Barāʾ in a more complete form than the narration of Qatādah, and its extraction will be mentioned under number (3243). *

(When he rose at night to pray, he would perform two light rakʿahs). It was recorded by Abū ʿAwānah in his "Ṣaḥīḥ" (2/331- second), and through his route: al-Aṣbahānī in "al-Targhīb" (2/782/1191), al-Baghawī in "Sharḥ al-Sunnah" (4/18/809) - and he authenticated it -, and Ibn Abī Shaybah in "al-Muṣannaf" (2/273), and through his route: al-Bayhaqī in "al-Sunan" (3/6) from the route of Sulaymān ibn Ḥayyān from Hishām ibn Ḥassān from Muḥammad ibn Sīrīn from Abū Hurayrah who said: ... and he mentioned it as marfūʿ [attributed to the Prophet]. I said: This isnād is good, and it meets the criteria of Muslim, despite some discussion regarding the memory of Sulaymān ibn Ḥayyān. There is a difference in its wording, as some narrated it as his action (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam), and others as his command. This command has been disputed regarding Hishām ibn Ḥassān, as some raised it [to the Prophet], and some stopped it [as a statement of a Companion], and it was preferred by Abū Dāwūd and al-Bayhaqī. As for the first; it was narrated by Ibn Abī Shaybah - and followed by Ādam ibn Abī Iyyās - who both said: from Sulaymān with it; as we mentioned above from his action (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam). Al-Rabīʿ ibn Nāfiʿ Abū Tūbah opposed them: he narrated to us from Sulaymān ibn Ḥayyān with it as marfūʿ with the wording: "When one of you rises at night; let him perform two light rakʿahs." It was recorded by Abū Dāwūd (1323): al-Rabīʿ narrated it with it, and he criticized it by stopping; he said after it:
