"Indeed, you will encounter after me a trial and disagreement—or he said: disagreement and trial—so someone from the people said to him: Who will be for us, O Messenger of Allāh?! He said: Adhere to the trustworthy one and his companions, and he was referring to ʿUthmān by that." It was recorded by al-Ḥākim (3/99 and 4/433-434), and Aḥmad (2/345) through the route of Wahīb ibn Khālid: Mūsá ibn ʿUqbah narrated to us, saying: My grandfather Abū Umayy narrated to me (and in another narration by al-Ḥākim: Mūsá, Muḥammad, and Ibrāhīm, the sons of ʿUqbah, said: Abū Umnā narrated to us) Abū Ḥabībah: that he entered the house while ʿUthmān was besieged in it, and he heard Abū Hurayrah asking ʿUthmān for permission to speak, so he permitted him. He stood, praised Allāh, and extolled Him, then said: I heard the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) say... and he mentioned it. Al-Ḥākim said in both places: "The isnād is authentic." And al-Dhahabī agreed with him. I say: Its narrators are trustworthy, the narrators of the authentic collections; except for this Abū Ḥabībah, and Ibn Ḥibbān mentioned him in the nicknames of "trustworthy followers" (5/591), and al-ʿAjlī said in his "Trustworthy Ones" (495/1929): "A Medinan follower, trustworthy." It is mentioned that he was the client of ʿUrwah, and perhaps it is by inheritance, for he was the client of al-Zubayr ibn al-ʿAwwām, the father of ʿUrwah, as in "Tārīkh al-Bukhārī" (nicknames 24/184), and "al-Jarḥ" (4/2/359) and others, and they informed that Abū al-Aswad also narrated from him: Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān, who is trustworthy among the narrators of the two Shaykhs like Mūsá ibn ʿUqbah, and his two brothers who are mentioned with him in the narration of al-Ḥākim are also trustworthy, and they are among the narrators of Muslim. Abū Aḥmad al-Ḥākim mentioned the three brothers in "al-Asmāʾ wa-al-Kuná" as narrators from Abū Ḥabībah.
