three times, so I asked: Who is this for whom you silenced me?! He said: "This is a man who does not like falsehood, [this is ʿUmar ibn al-Khaṭṭāb]." It was recorded by al-Bukhārī in "al-Adab al-Mufrad" (342) - and the context is his -, and by al-Ṭaḥāwī - in a shortened form - and by Aḥmad (3/435), as well as al-Ḥākim (3/461 and 615) - with additions from both -, and also by al-Ṭabarānī (1/number 842 and 843) through the route of ʿAlī ibn Zayd from ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Abī Bakrah. I said: And this isnād is weak; it has two defects: the first is the disconnection between this ʿAbd al-Raḥmān and al-Aswad ibn Sarīʿ, as explicitly stated by Ibn Mandah; for the ḥāfiẓ mentioned in "al-Tahdhīb" in the biography of al-Aswad: that al-Ḥasan and this ʿAbd al-Raḥmān narrated from him, followed by his statement: "Ibn Mandah said: Their hearing from him is not authentic, he died during the days of the Battle of the Camel in the year (42)." I said: al-Dhahabī followed him on this statement...". Then he critiqued it with the conclusion that the Battle of the Camel was in the year (36) without dispute, and that Aḥmad and Ibn Maʿīn mentioned that he died in the year (42). I said: Whether his death was in this year - which we lean towards for the aforementioned reasons - or the year before; I do not see a reason for the disconnection claimed by Ibn Mandah; because this ʿAbd al-Raḥmān was born in the year (14) in Basra, so he certainly met al-Aswad; because if we assume that the death was in the year (36), then ʿAbd al-Raḥmān's age would be (22) years, and according to what is more likely to us, his age would be (28) years at that time, knowing that al-Aswad had settled in Basra and preached there. And perhaps for this reason, when the ḥāfiẓ al-Mizzī and others wrote his biography, they mentioned those from whom he narrated
ثلاثاً، فقلت: من هذا الذي سكّتني له؟! قال: "هذا رجل لا يحب الباطل، [هذا عمر ابن الخطاب] ". أخرجه البخاري في "الأ دب المفرد" (٣٤٢) - والسياق له-، والطحاوي- مختصراً- وأحمد (٣/٤٣٥)، وكذا الحاكم (٣/ ٤ ٦١ و٦١٥) - والزيادة لهما-، والطبراني أيضاً (١/ رقم ٨٤٢ و ٨٤٣) من طريق علي بن زيد عن عبد الرحمن بن أبي بكرة به. قلت: وهذا إسناد ضعيف؛ له علتان: الأولى: الانقطاع بين عبد الرحمن هذا والأسود بن سريع، على ما صرح به ابن منده؛ فقد ذكر الحافظ في "التهذيب " في ترجمة الأسود: أنه روى عنه الحسن وعبد الرحمن هذا، وأتبعه بقوله: "قال ابن منده: ولا يصح سماعهما منه، توفي أيام الجمل سنة (٤٢). قلت: تبعه الذهبي على هذا الكلام ... ". ثم تعقبه بما خلاصته أن وقعة الجمل كانت سنة (٣٦) بلا خلاف، وأن أحمد وابن معين ذكرا أنه توفي سنة (٤٢). قلت: وسواء كانت وفاته في هذه السنة- وهو الذي نميل إليه لما تقدم-، أو كانت التي قبلها؛ فلا أرى وجهاً للانقطاع الذي ادعاه ابن منده؛ لأن عبد الرحمن هذا ولد سنة (١٤) في البصرة، فهو قد أدرك الأسود يقيناً؛ لأننا إذا افترضنا أن الوفاة كانت سنة (٣٦) فيكون عُمُرُ عبدِ الرحمن حينئذ (٢٢) سنة، وعلى ما هو الراجح لدينا يكون عمره يومئذ (٢٨) سنة، مع العلم أن الأسود كان نزل البصرة وقص بها. وكأنه لذلك لما ترجم له الحافظ المزي وغيره، وذكروا من روى عنهم من
