an oddity from the commentator Muḥammad Fuʾād ʿAbd al-Bāqī, may Allāh have mercy on him, for his wording was "... from ʿUtay ibn Ḍumrah who said: I saw a man with Abī who was boasting ...". The mentioned person thought that the word "Abī" with the hamzah fathah was an attribution of the yāʾ to the word "father," meaning the father of the speaker ʿUtay ibn Ḍumrah, thus making his father Ḍumrah a Companion of the ḥadīth, and he commented: "I have no mention of this Companion!" However, it is (Abī) with the hamzah ḍammah, referring to Ubayy ibn Kaʿb, the well-known Companion. The rightly-guided Caliph ʿUmar ibn al-Khaṭṭāb (raḍiya Allāhu ʿanhu) acted upon this ḥadīth and said: "Whoever boasts about the tribes, let him be bitten, or let him be suckled." It was narrated by Ibn Abī Shaybah as in "al-Jāmiʿ al-Kabīr" (3/235/2).
