the polytheists believe in it!! That is the far-reaching misguidance. The root of the misguidance of these who follow the Jahmiyyah is that they were influenced by the Muʿtazilah and the Jahmiyyah, who went astray with clear misguidance by denying many of the unseen matters related to Allāh, the Exalted, and His attributes. This is due to two reasons: the first is their weak faith in Allāh and His Messenger and what came from them. The second is the weakness of their intellects and their lack of understanding of the texts. This is the example before you: they did not believe that Allāh is above the heavens despite the clarity of the verses on this matter, including His saying, the Exalted: "Do you feel secure that He who is above the heaven will not cause the earth to swallow you, and suddenly it will shake?" (Sūrah al-Mulk, 16), and the authenticity of the ḥadīth of the slave girl, who was testified to have faith because she recognized her Lord is above the heavens. Therefore, they hastened to deny its authenticity, and as for the verse, they nullified its indication with their diseased intellects, because it occurred to their feeble minds that "above" here is locative, which is a clear error, so they fled from it and interpreted "He who" as the angels, thus falling into another error. They were confronted by his saying (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam): "Have mercy on those on the earth; the One above the heaven will have mercy on you," which is explicit that "above" in both parts of the ḥadīth means "over." When some of the ignorant among the Ghumariyyah saw this and that it invalidates their aforementioned interpretation, they hastened with all brazenness and ignorance to say that it is a "false ḥadīth"! (1) Contrary to all scholars, even their own Ghumariyyah teachers, as I have clarified in the addendum printed at the end of the second volume of "al-Ṣaḥīḥah," printed in Amman, number (12)
