continued eating dinner with a bone in his hand. I entered and said, "O Messenger of Allāh! I went out for some of my needs, and ʿUmar said such and such to me." She said, "Then Allāh revealed to him, and it was lifted from him—while the bone was still in his hand, he had not put it down—and he said..." and he mentioned it. The context is from al-Bukhārī, and the other narration is from al-Bayhaqī, which is also a narration for al-Bukhārī. This is the narration of Hishām ibn ʿUrwah—may Allāh have mercy on him—and Ibn Shihāb al-Zuhrī—may Allāh have mercy on him—disagreed with him in his statement: "... after the veil was revealed." Al-Zuhrī said: from ʿUrwah from ʿĀʾishah: that the wives of the Prophet (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) used to go out at night when they relieved themselves to al-Manāṣiʿ—a wide open space—and ʿUmar used to say to the Prophet (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam): "Veil your women." But the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) did not do so. Then Sawdah bint Zamʿah, the wife of the Prophet (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam), went out one night for dinner—she was a tall woman—and ʿUmar called out to her: "Indeed, we have recognized you, O Sawdah!" in his eagerness for the veil to be revealed. Then Allāh revealed the verse of the veil [(O you who believe, do not enter the houses of the Prophet...) the verse] (al-Aḥzāb, 53). It was recorded by al-Bukhārī (146), and also by Muslim, al-Ṭaḥāwī in "Sharḥ al-Maʿānī" (2/392), Ibn Jarīr (28/29), and also by al-Bayhaqī, and Aḥmad (6/223), with the addition by Ibn Jarīr, and its chain is good. Al-Ḥāfiẓ attributed it (1/249) to Abū ʿAwānah in his "Ṣaḥīḥ". There is supporting evidence from the ḥadīth of Anas in the story of the Prophet's (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) marriage to Zaynab, known in "the two Ṣaḥīḥs" and others, and it will be mentioned soon, if Allāh wills, here. The reader will see the apparent difference between the two narrations. In Hishām's narration, the story occurred after the revelation of the verse of the veil, while in al-Zuhrī's narration, it was revealed before it. Al-Ḥāfiẓ Ibn Kathīr said in his "Tafsīr" (3/505): "The well-known is the first."
ليتعشى وفي يده عَرَق، فدخلت فقالت: يا رسول الله! إني خرجت لبعض حاجتي، فقال لي عمر كذا وكذا، قالت: فأوحى الله إليه، ثم رُفع عنه- وإن العرَقَ في يده ما وضعه-، فقال ... فذكره؛ والسياق للبخاري، والرواية الأخرى للبيهقي، وهي رواية للبخاري. هذه رواية هشام بن عروة- ﵀، وقد خالفه ابن شهاب الزهري- ﵀ في قوله: ".. بعدما ضرب الحجاب "، فقال الزهري: عن عروة عن عائشة: أن أزواج النبي ﷺ كن يخرجن بالليل إذا تبرَّزن إلى المناصع- وهو صعيد أفيح- فكان عمر يقول للنبي ﷺ: احجُبْ نساءك. فلم يكن رسول الله ﷺ يفعل، فخرجت سودة بنت زمعة زوج النبي ﷺ ليلة من الليالي عِشاءً- وكانت امرأة طويلة-، فناداها عمر: ألا قد عرفناك يا سودة! حرصاً على أن ينزل الحجاب، فأنزل الله آية الحجاب [ (يا أيها الذين آمنوا لا تدخلوا بيوت النبي....) الآية] [الأحزاب/٥٣] . أخرجه البخاري (١٤٦) ، ومسلم أيضاً، والطحاوي في "شرح المعاني " (٢/٣٩٢) ، وابن جرير (٢٨/٢٩) ، والبيهقي أيضاً، وأحمد (٦/٢٢٣) ، والزيادة لابن جرير، وسندها جيد، وعزاها الحافظ (١/٢٤٩) لأبي عوانة في "صحيحه ". ولها شاهد من حديث أنس في قصة تزوج النبي ﷺ زينب المعروفة في "الصحيحين " وغيرهما، وسيأتي قريباً إن شاء الله تعالى هنا. ويرى القارئ الاختلاف بين الروايتين ظاهراً، ففي رواية هشام أن القصة وقعت بعد نزول آية الحجاب، وفي رواية الزهري أنها نزلت قبلها، قال الحافظ ابن كثير في "تفسيره " (٣/٥٠٥) :"والمشهور الأول ".
